Budget Update: March 2017

March 23, 2017 by jessica 6 Comments

Zara Strappy Dress with Frills :: Bedknobs & Baubles

Ugh. I swear, what didn’t I buy is a better question for this month’s shopping confessions. I used our trip to New Orleans as rationale for quite a few purchases early in the month and even then I was still on budget until our weekend in Chicago led me astray. What can I say? Nordstrom Rack will always get me when there’s a deal on a DVF wrap dress and Zara’s trendy pieces are just too good to pass up. I’ll subtract the deficit from next quarter’s budget to stay on track with my annual allotment.

BUDGET
First Quarter Budget: $850
Spent in January: $358 (decreased thanks to a Nordstrom price adjustment)
Spent in February: $256
Spent in March: $401
Amount Remaining: -$165

Wardrobe Update: March 2017 :: Bedknobs & Baubles

PURCHASED
See all of this year’s sartorial purchases here.

  • LOFT Floral Lace Striped One-Shoulder Top ($38): With floral lace trim and stripes, what’s not to love about this top? It’s such a pretty take on the one-shoulder trend. I wore it with denim shorts in New Orleans. Order your regular size and a size down to try them both. I liked the torso more in the small, but the elastic felt uncomfortable under the arm so I went with the medium.
  • Greylin Karissa Cross Front Printed Skater Dress ($60): ASOS has some great sale finds if you’re patient enough to sift through hundreds of pages of merchandise to find them. I fell in love with this dress for its cross-strap detail in the front and the flattering piping. It’s no longer available, unfortunately.
  • Sea & Grass Market Tote Bag ($73; featured here): The bag featured above is similar to the one I actually purchased on Etsy from Sea & Grass (a.k.a. my newest handbag obsession). It looks like they raised the price of the tote to $85 after I purchased it, but I’d still recommend it at its current price. I used it every day in New Orleans and it fit everything I could possibly need for a day out. The craftsmanship of the bag is beautiful and the semi-glossy finish makes it water resistant if you choose to bring it to the beach.
  • ZARA Pearly Strappy Sandals ($60): I feel like my style is completely on point whenever I order something and see it on Blair the next day. 😉 I just love these sandals. They’re basically jewelry for your feet.
  • J.Crew Bandana in Mermaid Print ($10): I’m all about the scarf and bandana trend this spring. I’ve been wearing a lot of blue lately, so this one seemed like a no-brainer to coordinate with this season’s ensembles either tied around my neck or on the handle of my bag.
  • ZARA Strappy Dress with Frills ($40; worn above): I kind of feel like a flouncy cupcake in this dress. I can’t say it’s the most flattering thing I own, but it’s just too fun. It’s lined, which was a nice surprise for such an inexpensive dress. I went up a size.
  • Diane von Furstenberg “Julian 2” Mini Wrap Dress ($70; not pictured): I found this at Nordstrom Rack in Chicago and couldn’t stay no to such a deep discount on a flattering wrap dress. The color scheme I went with has a magenta background. I’m looking forward to wearing it to work this spring and summer.
  • Uniqlo High-Rise Drape Shorts in black ($30; not pictured): I bought these to wear with the black tank top I also picked up at Uniqlo. Together, they create the illusion of a romper, but it’s way more practical when ducking into the ladies’ room. These were great for travel, too, since the fabric didn’t wrinkle even when shoved in a suitcase and taken out only on the last day.
  • Uniqlo Tank Top in black ($20; similar to the one above): I wish this was available online. It’s similar to the Topshop one above only without the double strap detail in the back. It’s the same material as the shorts, making it great for travel.

GIFTED
As always, I want to be transparent about what I’ve received from companies for review or as part of a collaboration.

  • GlassesUSA “Muse” Sunglasses: I just love the matte finish!
  • Sweet & Spark Vintage Floral Earrings: I brought them to New Orleans and featured them in this Instagram. I’ll post a snapshot on the blog soon! In the meantime, you can meet the curator of Sweet & Spark here.
  • Make Me Chic Off-The-Shoulder Ruffle Dress: As with most items from these types of retailers, this dress is ultra short. I’m actually going to take it to the tailor to have hemmed into a shirt.
  • Prada Round Sunglasses: DITTO is unfortunately ending its Endless Eyewear program. I had credits remaining from my partnership with them and spent them on this pair of sunglasses. They’re ridiculous, but pretty fun to wear. If you have your eye on any designer sunglasses, check to see if DITTO is carrying them first. They’re 50% off right now and final sale. Shop the sale here.

DIDN’T WORK OUT
Things I tried and didn’t love.

  • ASOS Salon A-Line Lace Mini Dress: I so badly wanted this to work! While it’s incredibly adorable in person, I just didn’t see myself wearing it more than once or twice. (It’s okay, though. I did buy a yellow dress in January!) If you have a special occassion coming up, give it a whirl! I found that it ran large around the chest, which is really the only place you’re fitting this for.
  • LOFT Vine Sleeveless Shirt Dress: I’m really surprised this is almost out of stock already. It’s fine, but I thought the pattern seemed too old-fashioned in person.
  • J.Crew Factory 5″ Pull-On Shorts: These run true to size, but they gave me major FUPA. :: blush :: (Is that too honest for the blog?)

DAYDREAMING ABOUT
The items I just might add to my wardrobe next month.

  • The loafers I’ve been contemplating for over a month now.

I’ll be linking up with Fran!

Snapshots from New Orleans

Snapshots from New Orleans

And just like that, we’re back from our trip to the The Big Easy! It’s such a beautiful city (especially when you veer off Bourbon Street) with Instagrammable details around every corner! I have hundreds of photos to sift through on my camera before I put together a guide of what we experienced in the city. Until then, here are a few mini moments from our stay:

  • It’s impossible to ignore all of the pretty architectural details and colors of the buildings in New Orleans. I drove Dave crazy stopping every few feet to take another photo!
  • Before our flight on Tuesday morning, we took one last stroll around the city and stumbled across Exchange Place, a quaint side street that reminded us of Europe. I wish we had come across it earlier in our trip. One of the restaurants on the street, Green Goddess, sounds amazing.
  • We enjoyed a Ramos gin fizz at Tujague’s, home to a stand-up bar shipped over from Paris in 1856. The best cocktails, however, were at Carousel Bar & Lounge in Hotel Monteleone where we enjoyed a milk punch (which kind of reminded me of eggnog) and a Pimm’s Cup.
  • One of the highlights of the trip for me was a tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, the oldest cemetery in New Orleans.
  • I used this bag every day on our trip. It held everything I could possibly need with plenty of room for trinkets I collected throughout the day. (You can snag the dress I’m wearing in the photo here. I’m tempted to buy the green one, too.)
  • We strolled around the Garden District one morning and took in the architectural details and inspiring color combinations. If we’re lucky enough to buy a house with an open front porch, I’m definitely painting the ceiling a pretty shade of light blue.
  • I don’t know if it’s because I grew up in a yellow house with turquoise blue trim, but I couldn’t walk past a house with that color combination and not take a photo!
  • Of course we indulged in beignets at Cafe du Monde. They’re as delicious as they’re rumored to be, but I’d actually recommend skipping the frozen latte. It’s entirely too much sugar with the beignets. I left with the worst stomach ache!

New Orleans Packing List

New Orleans Packing List

By the time you read this, we’ll be on our way to New Orleans for four nights and I could not be more excited to explore the Big Easy and bask in some summer-like weather! Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to pack all of my new spring items and snap photos of all of them. Get ready for lots of pastel walls and wrought iron details in my outfit photos over the next few weeks! I’ve never been to New Orleans before, but we’re armed with a Google Map full of must-sees, must-eats, and must-drinks. If you have any recommendations, though, please let me know! You can follow my adventure on Instagram and Snapchat (username: bedknobsbaubles). The latter I use mostly for IRL friends, so it’s the unedited, non-blog-worthy take on my life.

The pieces above are just a fraction of what I’m packing in my suitcase. You don’t actually think I’m that good at packing and rewearing pieces, do you? 😉 I’m also bringing my favorite pink dress, this yellow number, a dress that has the best neckline detail, this blue and white one, and these draped shorts that look fantastic with the black tank top and pearl sandals. I also received these matte black sunglasses that I’m bringing along and these stunning earrings from Sweet & Spark if they arrive before we depart. The other items include:

1. Zara Strappy Dress with Frills | 2. Bauble Bar Geranium Stud Earrings | 3. Rebecca Minkoff Mini Affair Bag | 4. Holst + Lee Tinseltown Fringe Earrings | 5. Zara Pearly Strappy Sandals | 6. Topshop Black Cami (mine is similar from Uniqlo) | 7. Gap Denim Shorts | 8. Julie Vos Bangle Bracelet (similar to the one I’m actually bringing) | 9. LOFT Floral Lace One-Shoulder Top | 10. Sea & Grass Market Tote | 11. Sam Edelman Gigi Sandals

J.Crew Majesty Peacoat :: Bedknobs & Baubles

Remember those warm days a few weeks ago where I could get away with spring outfits like this and this? I wish that were still the case! Back in June when I booked our Hamilton tickets, I thought that March would mean we could wear spring jackets during our weekend in Chicago. Nope. Instead, I was back in winter wear bemoaning the fact that icy weather seems to last entirely too long in the Midwest! Either way, it was a fun weekend escape to the Windy City. The main event, of course, was finally seeing Hamilton and it’s worth all of the hype. Honestly, I can’t even begin to describe just how incredible it was and if you have the chance to go, definitely do so. Other than that, we ate, drank, and shopped our way through the city. I snagged this dress at Zara, which isn’t the most flattering, but the ruffled bodice was just too fun to pass up. It’ll be coming with me to New Orleans at the end of the week!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
