2016 Resolutions

2016Resolutions

Happy 2016! Honestly, I’d be lying if I said I was excited to get back to my weekly routine on the first Monday of the year, but I am happy to have the holiday hoopla behind me! After a month of travel — and a flat tire on Saturday — I’m ready for a few weeks at home. And, it’s a good thing we don’t have plans this month. I’m going to need the extra time to get started on my new year’s resolutions:

CLEAN, ORGANIZE, PURGE

Dave and I have lived together for almost five years and we’ve accumulated quite a few things in our small apartment. Now that we’re becoming more serious about our house hunt, I’d like to spend the next few months going through our place and getting rid of the items we don’t love. I don’t want to move things into a new home if we’ll never use them again. I’m planning to go through my wardrobe in January and donate or sell unused items in February. After that, I will be going through the boxes I moved from my old apartment and never opened since. It’s a daunting project, so I’m heading down memory lane one box per weekend until the project is done, which should be completed by March.

FEWER, BETTER THINGS

This really goes hand-in-hand with the previous resolution. I’m growing tired of clutter. To be fair, it’s partly because we have a small apartment, but it’s also because I haven’t been as thoughtful about new purchases as I could be. In terms of clothing, I’m planning to cut back on the number of purchases during the year. Last year’s Pinterest board for new wardrobe additions shows that I added over 100 items in 2015. As much as I love clothing and accessories, that’s a bit much. (You can view my 2016 additions here.) This should be a fairly easy task to accomplish. I’m sticking to a stricter budget this year with $750 per season earmarked for clothing and accessories. This isn’t to say that I’m solely focusing on wardrobe classics again. I have enough of those. I simply want every sartorial purchase I make in 2016 to be very much “me.” For non-wardrobe items, I want to spend time looking for the “right” item and not throw money at something that will work for the time being.

TRAVEL SOMEPLACE NEW

My broken foot last year led us to reconsider some of our travel dreams. I wasn’t sure exactly when I’d be healed and how far I’d feel comfortable walking, so we revisited a few of our favorite U.S. cities. This year, we’d like to expand our horizons and travel to new destinations. We’re talking about visiting Copenhagen in the spring and taking a fall road trip to New England. I’ve always wanted to go to Maine and eat my weight in lobster rolls.

LOSE WEIGHT

…and speaking of weight, I need to shed a few pounds this year. My ambitious goal is to lose 20 pounds. I was on my way last year until my foot broke and I fell out of my exercise routine. Oh well, it’s a new year and a new chance to get myself in better shape! After college, I lost 70 pounds and have since gained back 35 of them. It’s incredibly hard, but I need to prioritize my health as I get older. Besides, my sluggish metabolism needs a kick in the arse with Jillian Michaels! I’d like to give myself little reward at each five-pound benchmark. Any ideas? (That said, I’m focusing more on total wellness than the scale itself with clean eating and exercise three times a week.)

JUST FOR FUN

Try two new recipes each month.

Keep champagne chilled for even the smallest special occasion.

Search for the perfect bar cart.

Wear bold patterns and embrace color.

Buy a new mattress.

Mini Moments: December 2015

Mini Moments: December 2015

With all of the year-end hoopla and twelve-month recaps, I usually forget to share a few of my favorite memories from the merriest month of all. Here are some of my beloved snapshots from December:

  • Kicked off the month at the Madison Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas concert. The first half was a little dry with opera singers and unfamiliar classical music, but they energized the room with beloved carols after intermission. The gospel choir was amazing.
  • Wore my favorite holiday earrings. I found these darling Kate Spade studs on eBay a few years ago and I look forward to wearing them every Christmas. It looks like there are a couple on eBay for reasonable prices here and here. I also adore this year’s pair of festive studs.
  • Mailed our first photo cards. I’m normally one for handwriting notes in traditional cards, but I’m getting lazier with old age! These Modify Ink cards allowed us to change the colors of the design to personalize our greeting. And match our outfits.
  • Tucked my hair in my turtleneck for an ever-so-chic faux bob!
  • Coaxed Bacon out from between the clean sheets. Fresh laundry is by far his guilty pleasure.
  • Unpacked dozens of ornaments, including this nutcracker we picked up in Belgium last year…
  • …and vintage ornaments from antique stores and the attic of my childhood home. (I’ll never know why the previous owner left such treasures behind!)
  • Adorned myself with pieces from Julie Vos’ “Pegasus” collection. Learn more about the designer’s inspiration here.
  • Took a stroll on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus for the first time since I graduated in order to take these photos.

The Weekend Guide

December 11, 2015 by jessica Leave a Comment

WeekendGuide121115

First off, I want to apologize for being a shoddy blog friend over the last few weeks. I’ve been so busy with work and holiday hoopla that I haven’t made time to catch up on your blog posts and Instagram feeds. I’ll make amends soon! In the meantime, leave comments to share what you’ve been up to, the most amazing holiday gifts you’ve procured, or the booziest cocktails that are getting you through the season!

LEARN
Every Christmas season, I realize how out of practice I am with handwriting the moment I start signing cards and addressing envelopes. I have no idea how I ever managed to fill an entire Blue Book during college exams without such extreme cramping! Who’s the culprit behind this holiday tradition? Find out here.

SIP
We picked out our Christmas tree on Wednesday and plan to decorate it tonight with cocktails in hand. I’m thinking this s’more-inspired drink is in order.

APPRECIATE
If you haven’t watched the “Instagram Husband” video by now, you’re missing out. It’s a shamefully accurate representation of what we put our non-professional blog photographers through! There’s also a hilarious Tumblr to follow.

MAKE
This pom pom garland is an easy DIY project. Make one for the holidays if you’re feeling ambitious or save the idea for a festive New Year’s banner. It’s also an adorable project for a baby shower.

LISTEN
Serial. Season. Two.

LAUGH
While I’d love to own everything in the Williams-Sonoma catalog, many of the items are ridiculous. #BarkYeah

EARLIER THIS WEEK
A selection of gift ideas for teachers and coworkers (basically, thoughtful without being personal).
25 of the best barware this holiday season.
Style steals under $50 and $100.
Broke out my favorite party shoes for the holidays. (They’re on sale here.)

The Weekend Guide

The Weekend Guide 11.13.15

ORDER
Cards Against Humanity’s holiday promotion is a far cry from last year’s bullshit stunt. Order “Eight Sensible Gifts For Hanukkah” now.

BUY
Now through Monday, you can save 20% on your order at Sephora if you’re one of their VIB members. It’s a great time to stock up on skincare items (I swear by this), your go-to lipstick (mine), and gifts for the beauty buffs on your list (love this). Use code VIB20. I placed a larger order a couple of weeks ago before knowing of the sale. I’ll share reviews of those items later today.

BAKE
How cute are these mini pecan tarts?! I have to bring an appetizer to a family gathering in a couple of weeks. Would it be wrong to bring dessert as a starter?

SIP
My office has year-round half-day Fridays, which basically means my 40 hours are in by the time 12:45 p.m. rolls around. I’d like to start greeting Dave with a cocktail when he comes home from work in the evening with “Cocktail Fridays.” (How ’50s housewife of me, right?) It’s basically an excuse to try all of the amazing drink recipes I come across on Pinterest like this coconut pineapple concoction! (It also gives me more of a reason to push for a bar cart in 2016.)

LISTEN
Alanis Morissette updated the lyrics to her not-so-ironic hit.

ENTER
Have you entered to win a custom sterling silver map necklace by A.Jaffe yet? No? Here’s the link.

FIVE UNDER $55

EARLIER THIS WEEK
I chatted with Julie Vos about the inspiration behind her latest collection.
Two gift guides are up! Browse ideas for the jewelry obsessed and the frequent flyer.
I’m giving you a chance to win a personalized map necklace.
A local antique store was in the holiday spirit.
I looked forward to an evening cocktail.
I borrowed amazingly glam Miu Miu sunglasses. (Details on how to try them yourself in the caption.)

Holiday Gift Guide for the Jewelry Obsessed

By this time of the year, I’m usually complaining about the hustle, bustle, and stress that the holidays bring. Not this year! I’ve been working on “The Ultimate Guide to the Holidays” to present to Dave in a few weeks. It’s an itinerary full of holiday cheer and excitement to make it the most magical time of the year, goddammit. Our festivities will kick off at Chicago’s Christkindlmarket on Nov. 20, but I couldn’t wait that long to start babbling about the holidays here. Besides, it seems I’m already behind. According to the National Retail Foundation, 40% of people started holiday shopping before Halloween.

I’d like to start this year’s gift-giving with my personal favorite: a guide for the jewelry obsessed. Obviously. Purchasing jewelry for the magpie on your list is a no-brainer, but it can be difficult to select baubles for another person. If you’re not sure what to buy, try a pretty catchall for her gems (I have this budget option and love it), a Tiffany & Co. Christmas ornament (that coveted blue box!), or a diamond ice cube tray (a great option for impersonal gift exchanges).

You can find these and other gift ideas on my Holiday Gift Ideas Pinterest board. I’ll continue to add items throughout the season!

*Read my Baublerella Bling Brush review here. It would be a fantastic stocking stuffer!

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
