On the Right Foot: Europe’s Scent Heritage, Politicizing Brunch, a Charming Cocktail Dress & More!

November 23, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

Christmas in Brussels
A snapshot from our 2019 December trip to Brussels.

I can’t believe Thanksgiving is already this week! It’s just going to be the two of us this year, but we’re still hoping to make it special with plenty of our favorite foods and actually eating at the dining table instead of in front of the TV. If you’re still on the lookout for a few special pieces for your table, head to my roundup here. Most are serveware pieces that you can use throughout the season.

The Rockefeller tree is just fine.

Speaking of Christmas trees, you’d need to use an artificial one for 12 years before it’s more eco-friendly than a real tree. (I’m Team Real Tree all the way.)

I love the whimsical bows on this dress.

I started following Liz Kamarul on Instagram recently. Her bold, graphic murals are stunning. Take this for instance. Plus, she painted a clawfoot tub with her signature pop-art-inspired work! It’s such a great idea for modern-meets-vintage bathrooms.

I’m eager to make this pasta e fagioli soup.

Researchers are recreating Europe’s centuries-old scents to curate its “smell heritage.”

The immersive van Gogh exhibit is now coming to Chicago. I just snagged tickets for April. (Hopefully things are safer by then. The museum is doing timed entrances for social distancing during the exhibit. Plus, it should be warm enough in April for outdoor dining and walking around the city.)

This pompom-topped beanie is only $22.50 today! I have it in lilac.

How brunch became political.

Great gift idea: an elegant cloche with matches for the candle-obsessed.

In case you missed it:

  • 15 festive finds for early Christmas decorating.
  • A full review of our new, affordable living room rug.
  • Treated myself to a new pair of flats. (Snag them here.)
  • Adorning our staircase with a bit of cheer. (Get the garland here.)

The myth of whiteness in classical sculpture.

Diane von Furstenberg is collaborating with H&M Home on a collection set to debut in 2021.

Dash & Lily is the cutest show on Netflix right now and is guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit.

I can’t get over how much I love this tiled shower. It’s the classic-meets-modern mix I adore, and I’m seriously considering it for our eventual bathroom remodel.

The pan that influencers love is $50 off right now.

Other countries have social safety nets. The U.S. has women.

This is by far the best pine-scented candle. I look forward to using it every holiday season.

Details on the upcoming Gossip Girl reboot.

30 Thanksgiving cocktails to consider for your celebration.

Great gift idea: A gorgeous puzzle to help your friend stay busy during the upcoming quarantine winter.

In case you missed it:

  • Plaid throw pillows for fall and winter.
  • Fifteen fun finds for Thanksgiving.
  • A coupon code for you to snag free prints from Parabo Press through the end of the month!

On the Right Foot: Sunglasses to Buy Now, a Stain Removal Guide, How to Destress & More!

November 9, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

First off, ohmygod, Biden won! I couldn’t be happier about the results of the election, especially knowing that Kamala Harris will be an inspiration to girls and women everywhere.

I had this pair of sunglasses on my wish list for weeks now and finally pulled the trigger. They’re gorgeous! The solid warm brown is more interesting than a traditional tortoiseshell.

We started watching The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix. So. Good.

A multi-sensory Vincent van Gogh exhibit is coming to the U.S. I hope it becomes safer to travel soon because I’d love to see this one.

The prettiest coupes.

How to remove every type of stain.

This green-on-green kitchen is everything.

It’s just going to be the two of us on Thanksgiving and I’m already starting to plan the menu so the day feels special. I think these pull-apart sour cream and chive rolls will make the cut.

Ten simple things to do when you’re feeling stressed.

Great gift idea: a set of beautiful espresso mugs for your caffeine-fueled friend.

In case you missed it:

  • Everything I bought and loved in October.
  • Oliver is doing so well on kitty Prozac!

On the Right Foot: History of Mirrors, Dressing for Ourselves, the Jacket to Buy at 50% Off & More!

This house tour is further proof that neutrals can be just as arresting as vibrant color, especially when there are layered textures and varying tones.

Sara Tramp, former member of the Emily Henderson blog team, launched her online ceramic shop over the weekend. Everything sold out almost immediately, but as fate would have, my favorite piece was somehow still available and I ordered it immediately. Follow the shop’s Instagram for updates.

This column gets to the heart of why I just can’t get on board with Get Organized with The Home Edit.

In isolation, we’re finally dressing for ourselves.

I’m thrilled that this faux potted pine is back at CB2. I bought it last year and it quickly became one of my favorite holiday decorations.

The refusal to wear facemasks isn’t the first time male ideology has affected public health.

I just purchased this lightweight jacket in dark moss and it’s a lot cuter than I expected it to be and it’s 50% off right now! The cinched waist gives it much-needed shape and there’s enough room around the hips for curvier girls. We have limited days left to wear it in Wisconsin this year, but it’ll be great for spring!

Our selfie-obsessed culture began centuries ago with the mirror.

I’m working at home through the end of the year, which necessitates cute swing dresses for Zoom meetings. I love this cheetah-print one.

Election Day is next week! Please vote early if you’re able to do so and preferably for Biden!

In case you missed it:

  • How to remove paint from antique hardware.
  • The bedroom that’s inspiring this month’s The Coveted.
  • Do you remember when our bedroom had a hole in the wall to the adjoining room? Here’s how we fixed it.

On the Right Foot: Pumpkin Bread, Underrated Thrillers, Charming Dishtowels, & More!

October 5, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

Calling this “bread” is a bit generous with the amount of sugar in the recipe, but it’s a delightful pumpkin bread that’s easy to make! I whipped it up on Sunday morning and it tastes like what you’d get if you put pumpkin pie in bread form.

These dishtowels are charming and a great price at $8 for a set of three. I love the kelly green striped set the most.

I realize it’s a bit early to talk about Christmas, but seeing this set of ornaments sent me off to Etsy to find similar ones for less. This artist has a few different kinds of wooden tree ornaments for $15 each. (While not similar to those, I also came across this darling little ornament.)

A roundup of underrated thrillers to add to your reading list.

I’ve been cracking up over Kate’s reviews of the 1990s’ American Girl catalogues. There’s an Instagram highlight labeled AG for your viewing pleasure.

I recently gave our bathroom a mini update with a coat of paint in a deep blue-green hue (“Riverway” by Sherwin-Williams). I probably should have done it a couple of years ago instead of holding off for an eventual remodel because I like the space so much more now! Over the weekend, I put a fresh coat of white paint on the linen closet, replaced the knobs with these in black, and ordered this light fixture to replace the fluorescent ceiling light.

I love this oversize scarf in the black check design. We’re all going to need more cold-weather garb if we’re going to have social-distanced get togethers outdoors this fall and winter.

How Black-led fashion organizations are holding the industry accountable.

I enjoyed this interview with Domino’s style director. In it, he shares the story of his most treasured possession. It’s a poignant reminder that the most cherished possessions aren’t just things; they have stories and memories associated with them that gives them life.

This $60 blouse is an elegant piece that would look just as beautiful dressed up with black pants as it would with a pair of jeans.

In case you missed it:

  • A roundup of everything I bought in September.
  • We’re trying to enjoy as many days outdoors as possible before it gets too cold.
  • The best $0.79 to spend on your home.
  • I’m glad my new bedding is enjoyed by all members of the family.
  • A real remodel is a long way off, so I gave the bathroom a mini update. (Swipe to see the shower curtain the previous owner had!)

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
