On the Right Foot: Your Next Netflix Binge, Now’s the Time to Declutter, Tomato Knives & More!

September 6, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Queen Anne’s lace, Door County, Wisconsin

Happy Labor Day! You can find me over at Kimi’s blog today with an interview about my workwear style!

Late summer is the perfect time for decluttering.

I love the original Gossip Girl, but – uh – the relationship between Chuck and Blair wasn’t great…

I was in Door County last weekend where I hiked, filled my camera roll with photos of plants, toured a lighthouse, and stayed at a beautiful new hotel. I have more photos to publish on Instagram this week and a travel guide coming soon!

The most iconic furniture items by decade that decor lovers should know.

The return of long denim skirts is a trend that I’m not here for.

I’m late to the game with ThirdLove bras, but I’m so glad I finally took the plunge. They’re beautiful and they have half-sizes for smaller cups! (Plus, unlike other brands, they don’t restrict those with small cup sizes to just the most basic t-shirt bras.) I bought this one and this one.

Cut up your late-summer tomatoes with the correct type of knife. The serrated blade will prevent you from crushing them.

Have you watched The Chair on Netflix yet? Loved it!

Curious about what I bought and loved last month? Here you go!

Things I Bought & Loved: August

September 1, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

IN THE WARDROBE
See all of this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • J.Crew linen muscle tank in black – I bought a couple of these earlier this summer and loved them so much that I decided a black one would be a versatile option to add into the rotation. Runs true to size.
  • J.Crew relaxed fit linen beach sweater in light walnut – This is such a great transitional sweater as we head into fall and the warm acorn color is so pretty. It has an open-weave knit, so you’ll want to keep that in mind while layering. It runs a size large.
  • Kate Spade ‘al fresco’ dress in chambray – I bought this dress in the gingham print last month and loved the cut so much that I couldn’t resist the chambray one once it went on sale. I’ll be wearing this throughout the rest of the summer and into fall with sneakers. Runs true to size. It does have a smocked back and the front is snug enough that you can skip a bra if you’d like.

AROUND THE HOUSE

  • Target x Hearth & Hand striped indoor/outdoor pillow – Target is killing it lately, considering the majority of my household additions this month are from the big box retailer. First up is this indoor/outdoor pillow that I’m keeping inside. It holds its shape well and the graphic stripes are a nice contrast to the traditional rug we have in our living room.
  • Rejuvenation spun brass tray, 10″ diameter – Keep an eye on this as it often goes on sale when Rejuvenation and the other Williams Sonoma brands have their warehouse sales. I bought it for $30 at the beginning of August, which is about what you should spend on it. The quality is great, however, and it has a nice heft to it — as it should for being solid brass. We’re using it on our dining room table to corral decor items and candles (and to hide a ding toward the center of the table that drives me nuts).
  • Target x Hearth & Hand fall tartan throw – This isn’t the best quality throw blanket as our cat has snagged it numerous times already, but I do love the colors and the plaid is a fun way to bring in an early dose of fall. Maybe consider it if you don’t have pets.
  • Target x Hearth & Hand colorblock striped throw blanket in green/oatmeal – Between the two Target throw blankets, this one is by far better than the other. The knit is substantial, it’s generously sized, and I just love the bold stripes. I won’t let the cat near this one in fear of a snag, so I can’t speak to how well it’ll hold up to claws.
  • Target x Studio McGee wood arched floor mirror – This mirror is gorgeous and comes in at just $100. However, the packaging is shockingly poor for a mirror. The first one I ordered arrived shattered. I had my second attempt shipped directly to the store so I didn’t have to deal with glass again if it also arrived broken. Target canceled my order, so I strongly suspect it didn’t make the trip in one piece. The third attempt, though, was a charm. So, if you also love it, be patient and know that there’s a good chance you’ll be placing a few orders to finally get one in good shape! It is worth the hassle.
  • mDesign storage baskets – I’m doing a bit of under-the-sink organization in our kitchen and ordered these storage baskets to corral cleaning supplies and vases. While not terribly exciting, they were one of the prettiest options I found that were still affordable, so I thought I’d share ’em!

Carolyn Misterek is the latest artist I’m following on Instagram.

Hate to break it to you, but your cotton tote isn’t that eco-friendly.

Have you watched White Lotus yet? Here’s how the set designers created spaces that accentuated the characters’ story arcs.

We’re in the final stages of selecting a contractor for our bathroom remodel. I came across this helpful list of questions to ask their references.

I’m going to order this art print for our dining room. (I prefer it in the “blue skies” colorway with a walnut wood frame.)

New Barbie dolls include a COVID-19 vaccine developer and other women scientists.

I stayed at four Graduate Hotel properties last month — here’s what I thought of them!

Isn’t the jacket in last week’s “The Coveted” so good? That shade of green is perfect!

On the Right Foot: A Seaside House Tour, A Trader Joe’s Must-Buy, Moon Gardens & More!

August 23, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

This is a fun house tour to kick off your week.

Here’s what happens if you test positive for COVID while traveling abroad.

There’s a new Girl Scout cookie!

Transforming blanket remnants into cabin wall art.

Speaking of blankets, here are nine throws that will be perfect for fall!

I just ordered this dress and I can’t wait for it to arrive! I bought the gingham one earlier this year, but I think chambray will be more versatile for late-summer and early-fall weekends.

Add Everything and the Elote Dip to your cart the next time you’re at Trader Joe’s. So. Good.

This cake recipe looks heavenly.

Leave it to Martha to introduce me to “moon gardens” and leave me daydreaming about what I’ll be adding to our yard next spring.

I’m not sure I’m ready for these early ’00s trends to make a comeback already!

A pair of curtains for $25! I ordered two sets in both gray and black (which is really a dark gray) to try in our bedroom. We have roller shades to block the light, so these would just be for aesthetics.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
