Happy New Year + Goals for 2022

January 3, 2022 by jessica Leave a Comment

I hope your new year is off to a wonderful and stress-free start! We celebrated the dawn of 2022 with a few of our close friends (all vaxxed and boosted, of course) who came over to play games and share in entirely too much bubbly with us. It was the perfect way to ring in the new year, and we followed it with a weekend of much-needed R&R — and a deep clean of the house. (Never mind the errant pine needles that’ll pop up over the next few months!)

If the last two years has taught us anything, it’s that even the best laid plans will have to pivot and adapt to uncertainty. I’m sure 2022 will be no different, but I’m still a fan of outlining a set of goals to keep us on track for the new year. Here’s what I hope to accomplish this year:

1 | TRAVEL SOMEWHERE NEW (MUNICH!)

Traveling to a new destination is a perennial goal of ours and one that we’re always happy to check off our to-do list. Assuming the pandemic eases up this year, we’re planning to visit Munich for Oktoberfest this year. We already have our hotel reserved and are researching the other place(s) we’d like to visit while we’re abroad. It feels a bit surreal to be planning an international escape after the last two years, but I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to travel safely and responsibly later this year. And, if not, well, the hotel is refundable.

2 | SHARE MORE HOME CONTENT WITH YOU + HERE’S WHAT’S ON DECK

Our bathroom renovations are scheduled to begin on Feb. 15 and I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to see our vision come together for the spaces — and to bring you along for the ride! In addition to that huge project, here’s what else I’d like to accomplish this year: repaint our main bedroom’s accent wall (I’m no longer in love with its current color), hang curtains in our bedroom, finish the guest room, continue honing my budding green thumb with more plants and flowers in our yard this spring, find the perfect armchair for our upstairs office space, finally organize the basement and workbench, and close up the inoperable door to the original porch of our home (you can see the door on the right of the opening image in this post).

3 | SPEND LESS, SAVE MORE — AND PARE DOWN IN THE PROCESS

First off, I should be able to pay off my student loans this year! That loan felt insurmountable post-graduation and I can barely believe that I’m in the homestretch! Additionally, I have a target number to increase my savings account by this year. It’ll essentially have me saving twice as much each month as I did in 2021. It doesn’t seem unrealistic, but it is going to require that I actually make a budget and stick to it. I think this will be good and will help me continue to strive for fewer better things. I want to be mindful of my purchases and ensure that each one is something that I’ll either use regularly or that will spark joy. Along those lines, I need to do a real purge around the house. We have boxes in our basement that we haven’t opened since moving in four years ago. Some are old photo albums and will stay, along with the prettiest Kate Spade dessert plates and cake stand I just don’t have a home for in our kitchen. (I resolve to bring out the cake plate for special occasions this year!) Other boxes are full of miscellaneous things that don’t have a place in our lifestyle. I have a difficult time letting go of material items because I feel so guilty for having spent the money in the first place, but it’s not doing us any good in a box.

Things I Bought & Loved: December 2021

December 29, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

After two years of leaning into a pandemic wardrobe of yoga pants and sweaters, I’m desperate for a sartorial change and focused my spending on statement pieces this month, along with a dress that will be worn on repeat once the weather gets warm again. It was a Treat-Yo-Self kind of month in the closet that continues to spark so much joy.

On the home front, it was all about our upcoming bathroom renovations. So, while I don’t have anything listed here for home purchases this month (despite ordering a fair amount of products), I’ll be doing a full recap of what we bought for our powder room and main bathroom in the coming weeks! It’s really fun to see it coming together even if we still have a punch list of items yet to order in the next couple of weeks. Wish us luck!

IN THE WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Kate Spade ‘Buckle-Up’ flats in glittery tweed – These make me the happiest! They dress up a little black dress, but they also look cute with jeans and a sweater. I found that they run true to size.
  • Banana Republic pleated sequin mini dress – I bought this when it was on sale for about half price, which is the price point I think you should spend on it. I love BR’s revival, but I don’t think the quality matches the price yet. That said, this is a beautiful dress with lots of shimmer and a fun swingy shape. The lining matches the shape and size of the dress instead of being cut smaller, so it’s a good option for women with hips. The arm holes don’t go down as far as they do on the model, so you’re not actually on the verge of a sideboob peep show. Some of the reviews to say to go down a size. I went with a medium, which was correct. (I’ll typically wear a medium on top and a large on bottom.)
  • Ann Taylor floral shirred v-neck top – This was really a workwear purchase for me. We’re getting back to doing more in-person events and I realized that I don’t have a lot in my closet that actually fits in terms of professional clothes now that we’re coming out of the worst of the pandemic. I went with a medium and it drapes well and has enough room at the top of my hips. The shirred v-neckline is flattering.
  • Loeffler Randall ‘Doreen’ clutch – There have been so many times that I’ve had a special occasion come up that I’ll find a beautiful cocktail dress for, but I’ll come up empty on the clutch. When I saw this beauty, I knew that it’d be the perfect clutch for every foreseeable dressy event. It’s a splurge, but I just had to have it. It’s destined to be one of those timeless items you’ll have in your closet forever. Plus, it actually holds quite a bit. My phone, card case, keys, and lipstick all fit inside with room to spare. It’s worth every penny.
  • Anthropologie tiered v-neck tunic dress – I love, love, love this dress! It’s SO flattering! I also bought this in a medium and it’s flirty and short and so much fun! I can’t wait for warm weather (or a warm-weather getaway) to wear this! I’ll be pairing it with tights until then.

15 Festive Finds for New Year’s Eve

December 22, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

If you haven’t ordered gifts by now, they’re not coming in time for Christmas, so let’s turn our attention to the most sparkly night of the year: New Year’s Eve. We finally get to say sayonara to the letdown that 2021 turned out to be! And, hey, I get it if we’re collectively traumatized by the last two years and unwilling to get too excited to ring in 2022 lest we jinx it, but it can’t hurt to set the new year off on the right foot! Here are 15 festive finds to celebrate the dawn of a new year:

  1. A sparkly tweed bag.
  2. This is the dress I bought for NYE.
  3. A dreamy light pink organza dress
  4. Vintage glasses with silver rims. I love this set!
  5. If card games are your thing, up the ante with a metallic set.
  6. An ice bucket is a must. Do you prefer marble and brass or wood grain?
  7. A swipe of shimmery eyeshadow.
  8. A metallic bow frame clutch that comes in a rich emerald green.
  9. Serve dessert in these darling coupes. I’m torn between the peach and blue options.
  10. Keeping it casual? Top it off with a knit beanie topped with a sequin pom-pom.
  11. Eye-catching earrings. (These are also stunning and more budget-friendly.)
  12. Sequin shirts can veer into going-out-top territory quickly. This one is elegant, however.
  13. Fancy flats. (Plus more options!)
  14. A resin and crystal bracelet that’s worth the splurge.
  15. If you’re leaving the house, this one is for you: a cozy faux fur coat to keep warm in the cold.

For those who celebrate Christmas, I hope your week is the merriest! We had a blissfully lazy weekend around the house, checking off our last-minute holiday chores. It was a welcome break in the action after spending the previous weekend in Chicago celebrating Dave’s 40th birthday and enjoying the city’s holiday décor.

Here are my favorite products of 2021.

For a fun (and easy) appetizer idea, try this antipasto wreath.

I’m beyond thrilled that Instagram is bringing back the chronological feed as an option next year.

These eye-catching floral cocktail rings are so much fun! I also love these sculptural earrings that now come in my favorite shade of pink.

I don’t know what we’ll be doing on New Year’s Eve yet, but I will be wearing this festive headband.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
