On the Right Foot: Mental Health Benefits of Early Holiday Decorating, A Shimmery Cocktail Dress, the Best Air Purifiers & More!

Yesterday marked our unofficial kickoff to the holiday season with a Friendsgiving celebration, and it was incredible to think about what a difference a year makes. Last year, it was just Dave and me celebrating a quiet day together with more food than two people could possibly eat in a day (but a week’s worth of leftovers was appreciated!). This year, things feel closer to what they were pre-pandemic and I’m thankful for the opportunity to take part in those traditions again. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

The seven-day week orders our society, but is it the best structure for time?

An update of where things are at with our bathroom renovations. We need to get the flooring selected for the powder room soon, and I’m leaning toward the blue tile. What about you?

On the Right Foot: The Best Winter Candle is on Sale Today, an Updated Thanksgiving Side, the Claw Clip is Back & More!

Thank you for all of your well wishes on Instagram over the past couple of weeks. My eye muscle surgery went well and I’m on the mend! Cosmetically, my eye is finally straight and not turned inward. But more importantly, I can see! I didn’t realize that my depth perception was essentially non-existent. Everything pops more than it did before! I had been seeing everything like a one-dimensional photograph with a slight bokeh around the edges of objects. It’s difficult to explain, but it’s kind of like getting glasses for the first time and you can finally see the detail that didn’t exist before. It’s really incredible and I’m beyond grateful for the surgical team.

The latest issue of Bon Appetit was filled with can’t-wait-to-make-it recipes. I’m going to start with roasted brussels sprouts with gochujang brown butter.

This home tour is a good reminder that layering neutrals is anything but boring.

Bookmark this recipe for a classic Manhattan cocktail.

Save 20% on the best winter candle today only! The glass can be repurposed for cocktails later, making it a wonderful gift as well.

How pearls obtain their symmetry.

The claw clip of the ’90s is back.

The trailer for the Sex and the City reboot has been released.

The prettiest neutral Christmas decorations.

The dress I ordered didn’t work out (it ran a bit small and the quality doesn’t justify the price). I still wanted something new to wear when I see extended family over Thanksgiving weekend and ordered this blouse to try. Fingers crossed that it works!

I love this moody space.

Nine credit cards that cover the cost of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry.

I hope you have a lovely week!

On the Right Foot: A Hand Cream for Dry Weather, the Nostalgia of Bad Photos, AI Names Paint Colors & More!

November 1, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Happy first day of November! This year has mercifully flown by and I’m excited to embrace the holiday season — although, maybe brands could hold off on sending Christmas content for another week.

And while I’d like to wait just a little bit longer before we’re knee-deep in Christmas cheer, I really do like these green gingham stockings.

Stuff mini pumpkins with mushrooms and cheese for a beautiful fall dish.

A snapshot of our living and dining rooms has become my most-liked photo on Instagram.

I have such dry skin once the weather gets cooler and recently tried a sample of this hand cream. I love it!

This made me smile!

The names for paint colors seem so random sometimes, but it’s even worse when AI takes the reins.

Loungewear dominated my favorite purchases of October.

Does anyone else kind of miss bad photos?

This Madewell tote is a good one!

Worth a scroll: 13 vintage-filled house tours.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

On the Right Foot: Wes Anderson’s Train Carriage, the Cult of the Nap Dress, Colorful Coupes & More!

October 25, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Peek inside the train carriage Wes Anderson designed.

Make a batch of Ted Lasso’s biscuits.

In time for Halloween: the history of cemeteries.

I just ordered a set of garland ties for the upcoming holiday season. They act like a twist tie, which will help garlands stay put on a staircase railing better than Command Hooks do.

Why an art museum turned to OnlyFans.

Even if we don’t realize it, adjectives in English absolutely have an order they must follow.

I loved looking through the galleries of these time capsule homes for sale in the Chicago area.

The cult of the Nap Dress.

Yes, Reese’s pumpkins do taste better than a regular peanut butter cup.

I can’t get over how much I love the print on this blouse.

Snag a set of colorful coupes just in time for holiday entertaining. The peach set is my favorite.

It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. We flew out to Philadelphia last Friday for a few days of exploring. It was our first time in the City of Brotherly Love and we loved every minute of it from the architecture to the restaurants, and most of all: the welcoming and friendly people. After that, we had one night at home before a flight to Denver to celebrate my cousin’s wedding. We got back to Madison late last night and have spent the day puttering around the house, getting caught up on laundry, grocery shopping, harvesting the season’s first tomatoes from the garden, and admiring just how much the hydrangeas have grown in the course of a week.
I always get a kick out of comparing views of our I always get a kick out of comparing views of our home today to the photos I took during our home inspection. (Swipe to see our main bedroom then!) While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

And, for those interested, I’ve linked my bedroom items here: https://liketk.it/5iC8R

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
