On the Right Foot: History of Mirrors, Dressing for Ourselves, the Jacket to Buy at 50% Off & More!

This house tour is further proof that neutrals can be just as arresting as vibrant color, especially when there are layered textures and varying tones.

Sara Tramp, former member of the Emily Henderson blog team, launched her online ceramic shop over the weekend. Everything sold out almost immediately, but as fate would have, my favorite piece was somehow still available and I ordered it immediately. Follow the shop’s Instagram for updates.

This column gets to the heart of why I just can’t get on board with Get Organized with The Home Edit.

In isolation, we’re finally dressing for ourselves.

I’m thrilled that this faux potted pine is back at CB2. I bought it last year and it quickly became one of my favorite holiday decorations.

The refusal to wear facemasks isn’t the first time male ideology has affected public health.

I just purchased this lightweight jacket in dark moss and it’s a lot cuter than I expected it to be and it’s 50% off right now! The cinched waist gives it much-needed shape and there’s enough room around the hips for curvier girls. We have limited days left to wear it in Wisconsin this year, but it’ll be great for spring!

Our selfie-obsessed culture began centuries ago with the mirror.

I’m working at home through the end of the year, which necessitates cute swing dresses for Zoom meetings. I love this cheetah-print one.

Election Day is next week! Please vote early if you’re able to do so and preferably for Biden!

On the Right Foot: Pumpkin Bread, Underrated Thrillers, Charming Dishtowels, & More!

Calling this “bread” is a bit generous with the amount of sugar in the recipe, but it’s a delightful pumpkin bread that’s easy to make! I whipped it up on Sunday morning and it tastes like what you’d get if you put pumpkin pie in bread form.

These dishtowels are charming and a great price at $8 for a set of three. I love the kelly green striped set the most.

I realize it’s a bit early to talk about Christmas, but seeing this set of ornaments sent me off to Etsy to find similar ones for less. This artist has a few different kinds of wooden tree ornaments for $15 each. (While not similar to those, I also came across this darling little ornament.)

A roundup of underrated thrillers to add to your reading list.

I’ve been cracking up over Kate’s reviews of the 1990s’ American Girl catalogues. There’s an Instagram highlight labeled AG for your viewing pleasure.

I recently gave our bathroom a mini update with a coat of paint in a deep blue-green hue (“Riverway” by Sherwin-Williams). I probably should have done it a couple of years ago instead of holding off for an eventual remodel because I like the space so much more now! Over the weekend, I put a fresh coat of white paint on the linen closet, replaced the knobs with these in black, and ordered this light fixture to replace the fluorescent ceiling light.

I love this oversize scarf in the black check design. We’re all going to need more cold-weather garb if we’re going to have social-distanced get togethers outdoors this fall and winter.

How Black-led fashion organizations are holding the industry accountable.

I enjoyed this interview with Domino’s style director. In it, he shares the story of his most treasured possession. It’s a poignant reminder that the most cherished possessions aren’t just things; they have stories and memories associated with them that gives them life.

This $60 blouse is an elegant piece that would look just as beautiful dressed up with black pants as it would with a pair of jeans.

In case you missed it:

  • A roundup of everything I bought in September.
  • We’re trying to enjoy as many days outdoors as possible before it gets too cold.
  • The best $0.79 to spend on your home.
  • I’m glad my new bedding is enjoyed by all members of the family.
  • A real remodel is a long way off, so I gave the bathroom a mini update. (Swipe to see the shower curtain the previous owner had!)

On the Right Foot: Remembering RBG, Preparing for a Pandemic Winter, Soup Bowls to Buy, & More!

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

When I began seeing murmurs of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing on social media Friday evening, I frantically Googled for confirmation in disbelief, shock, and horror — and then I cried. I had never before shed tears for a public figure and I wish it was simply out of respect for and in honor of a remarkable leader. But it wasn’t just that. We all knew how pivotal her passing would be in a Trump-led America — and the collective fear of fellow Democrats was realized less than two months from the election. I channeled that anger into a donation to Amy McGrath’s campaign, the Kentuckian looking to unseat Mitch McConnell, and it looks like other leftists also donated in record amounts over the weekend. This is not the year to be apathetic. Donate if you can. Vote because your future depends on it.

Many people are dreading being cooped up inside during a pandemic winter. Here are some things you can do to prepare.

Such a cute dress to pair with sneakers this fall.

We started watching Ted Lasso last week and I adore it. It’s both funny and heartwarming.

I’ve had my eye on these soup/pasta bowls for well over a year now. I think I’m finally going to take the plunge.

How algorithms determine your mood based on what you’re writing online.

Here’s what inspired the set design for Netflix’s Ratched.

One legacy of the pandemic may be less judgement of those who opt not to have children.

This dress is great. It reminds me a bit of Ulla Johnson, it’s $30, and it runs stupidly large. It’s pretty much the best work-from-home dress you could ask for. I normally get a medium in Target dresses and I sized down to an XS in this one. If I had a larger chest, sizing down only one size probably would have been preferable.

In case you missed it:

  • I shopped for a new rug and went with the first one in this post.
  • This month’s covetable roundup.

On the Right Foot: A Cheerful Anorak, Cheddar and Green Chile Scones, Wine Windows & More!

August 31, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

Door County Wisconsin
A snapshot from this summer’s social-distanced weekend in Door County.

The Haunting of Hill House is now part of an anthology series and the second installment will be The Haunting of Bly Manor. It’s based on Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, which is one of my favorite pieces of literature I studied in college. I can’t wait!

This cropped red anorak is too cute!

Repot your plants like a pro.

Italy is reopening “wine windows” that were originally used to serve vino during the Black Plague.

The New York Times published a thorough overview of how Breonna Taylor landed in the middle of a deadly drug raid. It’s a long read, but it’s the most comprehensive look at what happened surrounding her murder that I’ve come across yet.

The most iconic dresses from films.

This silk scarf is gorgeous!

I made savory cheddar and green chile scones last weekend. They were delicious! I don’t have a stand mixer and instead used a pastry cutter to incorporate the butter, which worked well. Also, a bench scraper was handy for cutting the scones into wedges.

Stutterheim just released a beautiful terracotta version of its flattering a-line raincoat. The brand runs true to size.

The Lips sofa turns 50 this year.

Meet Nicole Cardoza, the creator of the Anti-Racism Daily newsletter.

Keep an eye on this link for those plaid pillows to become available! I snagged a pair in a different color last year and they held up beautifully.

The history of the Mason jar.

In case you missed it:

  • Things I bought and loved in August.
  • Sharing a progress report on our front porch.
  • Dapper.

On the Right Foot: The House Dress, Ice Cream Cocktails, Colorize B&W Photos, & More!

August 24, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

Christian Siriano’s home embraces modernist design. It’s not my preferred style overall, aside from that serene bedroom above, but it’s fun to look at!

Artist Juliana Lupacchino is my new favorite Instagram follow.

I’m all about simple, beautiful handbags and this one fits the bill. Better yet, the caramel-brown version has a hot pink lining!

This is an interesting piece on how COVID-19 is impacting the beauty industry. In it, the author shares that lipstick sales have dwindled during the pandemic, which isn’t surprising when it’s just going to be smeared inside of a mask. (Granted, I still wear it for my Zoom calls.)

I added this set of face masks to my growing collection.

All hail the house dress, the quintessential fashion item of 2020.

It’s no secret that Wisconsinites are, um, devoted to their drinking culture and one of its finest examples is the ice cream cocktail. We’ve perfected the boozy dessert drink and you can, too. (Brandy Alexanders are my favorite, but I can’t seem to perfect a dairy-free alternative now that I can’t have lactose.)

Clearly our house shoes need an autumn-upgrade with these slip-on mules.

I shared a link to this inexpensive blanket in a recent roundup and have since purchased it in the lighter green plaid. It’s perfect for cooler evenings outside or by a campfire.

Did you see this amazing tool that colorizes old black-and-white photos? It’s time to pull out those family albums!

Add to cart: the sculptural jewelry from designer Hyun Yu. These earrings are stunning.

I’ve been dreaming about the cheddar and green chile scones we had at Bearded Heart Coffee in Door County (travel guide coming soon!). I’m going to try my hand at making them with this recipe.

In case you missed it:

  • Ten accent mirrors I love.
  • We stained our front porch!
  • That morning light.

Over the weekend, we drove to Michigan and welcome Over the weekend, we drove to Michigan and welcomed this little lady to the family! She’s a two-year old snow Bengal that was surrendered after being bullied by the other cats in her home. We’re pretty sure she’s a seal lynx point Bengal, which has Siamese in the lineage, based on her vibrant, slightly crossed blue eyes. She is the sweetest, softest, most playful, and unbelievably talkative little girl. We’re crazy about her!

We haven’t picked a name just yet, though. We have some ideas, but we’re waiting to get to know her personality more. 😊
