Behind the Baubles: Jenny Bird

Behind the Baubles: Jenny Bird :: Bedknobs & Baubles

Canada-based designer Jenny Bird is one of my favorite jewelers right now. Her sleek, modern aesthetic seamlessly mixes gold and silver to create eye-catching statement pieces. And if you’re not already familiar with the brand, you’ll be shocked by how affordable her pieces are. Take this necklace for example. That kind of attention to detail and quality in such a large piece is unheard of at $145 at most retailers. Jenny sums it up best:

I founded my line as an extension of myself; rooted in an innate desire to build something. I am a self-taught designer, and, as it turns out, it’s the most intuitive, effortless process that I have ever known. I am committed to a personal philosophy: the market does not need more soulless, short-lived fashion jewelry, nor does it need over-priced plated pieces. Each piece I design is deeply inspired and well thought-out;  produced in the highest quality, and sold at a fair price.

Not only does her approach to creating beautiful, accessible pieces earn my respect, it earns my total fangirl approach to her brand. My collection includes these major statement earrings, this pair that has incredible movement, and this minimal choker. Up next? I’ve got my eye on this pair of oversize studs in oxidized brass. Don’t they just look like the perfect accent piece for summer’s bohemian-inspired dresses?

The Coveted 03.28.2017 :: Bedknobs & Baubles

You may have noticed I added this clutch to my sidebar the other day. I’m completely enamored with it. I’m sure you can’t carry much more than a few credit cards, a cell phone, and your keys, but who cares? It’s the perfect clutch for summer with breezy dresses (like this one!) and strappy sandals. I especially love that the wrist strap looks like a bracelet. I have a Visa gift card that I’ve been holding on to since Christmas and will likely use it to buy the clutch. It’s just too cute to pass up and I can see myself using it quite a bit over the next few months. It also comes in red and black.

Chiffon Bridesmaid Dresses uk

It’s so hard to be back in Wisconsin after a wonderful trip to New Orleans! I loved the architecture, the easy-going nature of the city, and the weather–even if the humidity made my hair limp 15 minutes into the day! Even though we were there for a short amount of time, having the opportunity to debut my spring and summer clothes was such a nice respite from tights and wool sweaters! In addition to this wig, which is perfect for hot and humid weather with light, crisp cotton, I’ve been all about this pair of sunglasses that GlassesUSA sent over right before our trip.

GlassesUSA was founded with the mission to provide fashion-forward eyewear without the high price tag of designer brands, and they absolutely nailed it with their house brand Muse with the M0527 style that I’m wearing here. The oversize lenses have a flattering cat-eye shape and a unique matte finish. GlassesUSA carries more than just sunglasses, of course. If you’re in the market for a new pair of prescription glasses, you’ll be delighted to know that a complete pair with frames and lenses starts at $48. Prescription lenses are included free with every frame!

This blister block does wonders.)

Weekend Reading

Weekend Reading 03.24.2017

I can’t believe April is right around the corner! Where has the year gone already?! Next month should bring with it a spike in available homes for sale, so we’re hopeful we’ll find “the one” this time around. With that major purchase on the horizon, we’re pinching our pennies and planning to spend the weekend at home with new recipes to try and cocktails to mix up. I’m actually looking forward to a few days at home after traveling the past two weekends. I need a chance to finally unpack, run errands, and spring clean our apartment. What’s on your agenda?

SIP: It’s going to be 70 degrees today! It’s back to being seasonably chilly tomorrow, but I’m embracing the warm weather with a refreshing citrus cocktail and open windows!

DIY: Straw bags embellished with pom poms are everywhere this spring and they usually come with a high price tag. Follow in Grace’s footsteps and make your own instead! (She also linked to an Etsy shop for inexpensive straw bags. I want this one for the farmers’ market. It’s a steal at $28!) Use this bag and this one for inspiration!

SNAP: Are your blog photos feeling a little lackluster? Jess shares her tips to up your photography game.

AWW: Right?!

MISSING THE MARK: A couple of years ago, Anthropologie blamed its slipping sales on poor dress choices. However, the retailer still hasn’t got it right.

SNAG: These sandals are like the more refined version of the bauble-embellished pair I snagged at Zara. They’re a great deal at $70!

TAKE: Stop mindlessly scribbling notes during your work meetings and actually record the information effectively.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • A few snapshots from our trip to New Orleans. I’ll post a full recap of what we did in a couple of weeks!
  • This month’s “budget” update. Oops!
  • Many of the pieces I purchased this month went in my suitcase for New Orleans.
  • The latest “Behind the Baubles” Q&A with the founder of Sweet & Spark. An interview with Jenny Bird is coming up next week!

ON MY WISH LIST:

  • The bow detailing on this blouse.
  • This dress for summer vacations.
  • Bow-topped slides. (I prefer the gingham pair.)
  • A pair of wear-with-everything sandals.
  • A poplin wrap dress with ruffles.
  • A feminine dress to wear with sneakers this spring.

Budget Update: March 2017

Zara Strappy Dress with Frills :: Bedknobs & Baubles

Ugh. I swear, what didn’t I buy is a better question for this month’s shopping confessions. I used our trip to New Orleans as rationale for quite a few purchases early in the month and even then I was still on budget until our weekend in Chicago led me astray. What can I say? Nordstrom Rack will always get me when there’s a deal on a DVF wrap dress and Zara’s trendy pieces are just too good to pass up. I’ll subtract the deficit from next quarter’s budget to stay on track with my annual allotment.

BUDGET
First Quarter Budget: $850
Spent in January: $358 (decreased thanks to a Nordstrom price adjustment)
Spent in February: $256
Spent in March: $401
Amount Remaining: -$165

Wardrobe Update: March 2017 :: Bedknobs & Baubles

PURCHASED
See all of this year’s sartorial purchases here.

  • LOFT Floral Lace Striped One-Shoulder Top ($38): With floral lace trim and stripes, what’s not to love about this top? It’s such a pretty take on the one-shoulder trend. I wore it with denim shorts in New Orleans. Order your regular size and a size down to try them both. I liked the torso more in the small, but the elastic felt uncomfortable under the arm so I went with the medium.
  • Greylin Karissa Cross Front Printed Skater Dress ($60): ASOS has some great sale finds if you’re patient enough to sift through hundreds of pages of merchandise to find them. I fell in love with this dress for its cross-strap detail in the front and the flattering piping. It’s no longer available, unfortunately.
  • Sea & Grass Market Tote Bag ($73; featured here): The bag featured above is similar to the one I actually purchased on Etsy from Sea & Grass (a.k.a. my newest handbag obsession). It looks like they raised the price of the tote to $85 after I purchased it, but I’d still recommend it at its current price. I used it every day in New Orleans and it fit everything I could possibly need for a day out. The craftsmanship of the bag is beautiful and the semi-glossy finish makes it water resistant if you choose to bring it to the beach.
  • ZARA Pearly Strappy Sandals ($60): I feel like my style is completely on point whenever I order something and see it on Blair the next day. 😉 I just love these sandals. They’re basically jewelry for your feet.
  • J.Crew Bandana in Mermaid Print ($10): I’m all about the scarf and bandana trend this spring. I’ve been wearing a lot of blue lately, so this one seemed like a no-brainer to coordinate with this season’s ensembles either tied around my neck or on the handle of my bag.
  • ZARA Strappy Dress with Frills ($40; worn above): I kind of feel like a flouncy cupcake in this dress. I can’t say it’s the most flattering thing I own, but it’s just too fun. It’s lined, which was a nice surprise for such an inexpensive dress. I went up a size.
  • Diane von Furstenberg “Julian 2” Mini Wrap Dress ($70; not pictured): I found this at Nordstrom Rack in Chicago and couldn’t stay no to such a deep discount on a flattering wrap dress. The color scheme I went with has a magenta background. I’m looking forward to wearing it to work this spring and summer.
  • Uniqlo High-Rise Drape Shorts in black ($30; not pictured): I bought these to wear with the black tank top I also picked up at Uniqlo. Together, they create the illusion of a romper, but it’s way more practical when ducking into the ladies’ room. These were great for travel, too, since the fabric didn’t wrinkle even when shoved in a suitcase and taken out only on the last day.
  • Uniqlo Tank Top in black ($20; similar to the one above): I wish this was available online. It’s similar to the Topshop one above only without the double strap detail in the back. It’s the same material as the shorts, making it great for travel.

GIFTED
As always, I want to be transparent about what I’ve received from companies for review or as part of a collaboration.

  • GlassesUSA “Muse” Sunglasses: I just love the matte finish!
  • Sweet & Spark Vintage Floral Earrings: I brought them to New Orleans and featured them in this Instagram. I’ll post a snapshot on the blog soon! In the meantime, you can meet the curator of Sweet & Spark here.
  • Make Me Chic Off-The-Shoulder Ruffle Dress: As with most items from these types of retailers, this dress is ultra short. I’m actually going to take it to the tailor to have hemmed into a shirt.
  • Prada Round Sunglasses: DITTO is unfortunately ending its Endless Eyewear program. I had credits remaining from my partnership with them and spent them on this pair of sunglasses. They’re ridiculous, but pretty fun to wear. If you have your eye on any designer sunglasses, check to see if DITTO is carrying them first. They’re 50% off right now and final sale. Shop the sale here.

DIDN’T WORK OUT
Things I tried and didn’t love.

  • ASOS Salon A-Line Lace Mini Dress: I so badly wanted this to work! While it’s incredibly adorable in person, I just didn’t see myself wearing it more than once or twice. (It’s okay, though. I did buy a yellow dress in January!) If you have a special occassion coming up, give it a whirl! I found that it ran large around the chest, which is really the only place you’re fitting this for.
  • LOFT Vine Sleeveless Shirt Dress: I’m really surprised this is almost out of stock already. It’s fine, but I thought the pattern seemed too old-fashioned in person.
  • J.Crew Factory 5″ Pull-On Shorts: These run true to size, but they gave me major FUPA. :: blush :: (Is that too honest for the blog?)

DAYDREAMING ABOUT
The items I just might add to my wardrobe next month.

  • The loafers I’ve been contemplating for over a month now.

I’ll be linking up with Fran!

It was our first time in the City of Brotherly Love and we loved every minute of it from the architecture to the restaurants, and most of all: the welcoming and friendly people. After that, we had one night at home before a flight to Denver to celebrate my cousin’s wedding. We got back to Madison late last night and have spent the day puttering around the house, getting caught up on laundry, grocery shopping, harvesting the season’s first tomatoes from the garden, and admiring just how much the hydrangeas have grown in the course of a week.
I always get a kick out of comparing views of our I always get a kick out of comparing views of our home today to the photos I took during our home inspection. (Swipe to see our main bedroom then!) While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
