Weekend Roundup

June 1, 2019 by jessica Leave a Comment

Wearing: J.Crew sweater | Old Navy shorts | Vince sneakers (also brought these) | Photography backdrops from Foxbackdrop | Chan Luu earrings (shorter version) | Prada sunglasses

Olá! I’m finally back in the swing of things after our trip to Portugal and my birthday celebration on Thursday! To say Portugal was amazing would be an understatement. I keep thinking about the intricate tiles, the bright colors, and the azure water. If you ever have a chance to visit, say yes in a heartbeat! I preferred Lisbon to Porto, but both were absolutely stunning. I’ll share photos, along with our travel diary and recommendations as soon as I’m able to weed through the 1,000 photos I took!

We’re taking this weekend to relax, get back into our routine, take a break from overindulging in food and drink, and tidying up the place. We typically clean the house before a long vacation, but didn’t have the opportunity this time around because our cat, Bacon, was incredibly sick right before we left — to the point where we weren’t sure if he was going to make it. We spent the entire pre-vacay weekend taking him on emergency vet visits and trying to coax him to eat. With the help of appetite stimulants and anti-nausea medicine, he eventually ate a little bit and we felt better about leaving him with Dave’s parents. We’re so grateful — and relieved — that we came back to a healthy cat. (The working theory is that he got into something he shouldn’t have, either a plant or a cleaning supply, that poisoned him. I’ll spare you the detailed symptoms.)

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Weekend Roundup:

I can’t get over how much I love this sweater! I think it’ll be a belated birthday gift to myself.

Will the art of skywriting bounce back or die with the few people who know how to do it?

Orlando Soria is one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram, and I can’t wait for his new show, Unspouse My House, to air! (I also highly recommend his book.)

The best way to keep guacamole from turning brown.

Inside the studio of handbag brand Nannacay.

Recommendations for cruelty-free beauty products.

We had lunch at Korrito in London, where they serve Korean burritos and burrito bowls. I’m determined to replicate it at home and found two recipes — here and here — to get me started.

I can’t pull off this hat, but could someone please buy it and Instagram the hell out of it?!

Finds Under $50:

  • I’m all about this ring-handle wood jar. It looks like something you’d find at a flea market!
  • I bought this rope basket at Target recently when I was reorganizing our entry closet. It’s the perfect size to corral things like scarves and compact umbrellas.
  • I also purchased a pair of linen-blend shorts in black. They’re really comfortable and the elastic, drawstring waist is forgiving. Plus, they didn’t stretch out too much despite wearing them four times on the trip.
  • I’m crazy about this tunic-style dress!
  • I just ordered a set of these acrylic tumblers in the double old-fashioned size for patio drinks. I bought three in each color. The pink one is back ordered until October, so at least I’ll have a set of six until then!

In Case You Missed It:

  • Snapshots from Portugal and London.
  • A roundup of my favorite planters because I can’t get enough greenery lately!

15 Chic Indoor Planters for Your Home

15 Chic Planters for Your Home

Like any self-respecting millennial, I have an affinity for houseplants. I can’t step foot in a greenhouse without coming home with a new plant. There’s a lot of theories as to why my generation can’t get enough greenery, from wellness trends to replacing children with plants, and it has resulted in a doubling of houseplant sales over the past three years to $1.7 billion. All I can say is that it’s incredibly satisfying to put in relatively little work and be rewarded with something that thrives on that neglect. Plus, they’re such an easy way to update a room, adding texture and interest to a corner with minimal effort — especially when there’s a great planter to go with it.

I oftentimes have a planter at the ready in our house, just waiting for the perfect plant on my next trip to the nursery. I try not to hoard planters, but it’s really easy to do so when there are so many great options lately. I put together a roundup of 15 favorites below!

Weekend Roundup

Weekend Links on Bedknobs & Baubles

The neutral palette and clean lines of this home are right up my alley. I keep feeling like I need to add more color to my space, but there’s something so calm and beautiful about paring down.

It’s common to value the new and novel, but research suggests that doing the same thing twice can be just as satisfying.

I made stir-fried pork udon noodles last weekend and they were so good, including as leftovers the next day! Our grocery store only had the flat udon noodles instead of the thick ones like these, so I’m going to order some (or check out our local Asian market) before making it again.

Oooh! My beloved loafers now come in silver!

The “Instagram aesthetic” is over. (It’s difficult to post more in-the-moment photos without worrying if they go with the feed or if they’ll be liked, but I’m trying to get back to just posting what I like in the moment. Be prepared for an onslaught of Portugal pics next month. 😉 ) And, speaking of Instagram, the app is experimenting with hiding likes.

Okay, one more Insta-related topic … I came across two new-to-me accounts that I’m loving: Year & Day for beautiful tableware and The Inside Collective for old-home inspiration. (I’ve noticed my interests evolving on the app. I’m following fewer style bloggers and more home-related accounts, artisans, and small brands.)

How Mona May turned a fashion degree into a career costume designing iconic films like Clueless.

Five easy ways to make your travel routine more green. Honestly, I’m not as environmentally conscious as I’d like to be, and I’m working on making more sustainable changes in my routine. Plus, that smug satisfaction I feel when I remember my reusable shopping bags is pretty great.

I’m starting to feel guilty about the amount of packaging with online orders — especially with orders from retailers like Net-a-Porter. Sure, I love the fancy box and the ribbon, but I’m not actually going to keep those materials. These startups are offering sustainable alternatives. (Another interesting tidbit from that article: “In the 1920s, an average middle-income woman might have purchased two or three items a year and wore them for 10 to 20 years. Now, the same woman is buying 65 items of clothing per year and, on average, wears each garment three times.”)

I loved this piece on whether or not to embark on DIY projects. Oftentimes they do feel empowering, but when it’s a complex project that, sure, you could technically pull off, it’s okay to hire someone who can get it done in significantly less time.

Finds Under $50:

  • I mentioned this set of cloth napkins in yesterday’s post, but they’re too good to go overlooked if you like to entertain.
  • These are such a pretty and affordable way to experiment with the barrette trend.
  • A terrazzo cheeseboard!
  • I love this striped dress for summer with the figure-flattering smocked top. It also comes in plus sizes.
  • This is another pretty dress for summer.
  • Rattan isn’t going anywhere this year. This planter is the perfect way to bring the material into your home. Just leave a plant in its nursery pot and add a plastic tray to the interior bottom to prevent leakage.

In Case You Missed It:

  • Our custom built-in reveal!
  • Extending my newfound love of neutrals to my wardrobe wish list.
  • Dave bought the earrings in this roundup for me and they’re already my most-worn pair of the season.
  • Here’s what I bought for myself and for our home in April.

What I Bought in April – For Myself & For Home

April 25, 2019 by jessica Leave a Comment

Wardrobe Update April 2019

Up until this month, I had only purchased eight things for my wardrobe. I was doing well with my pared down approach to shopping and I was so much happier with my purchases. I’m not quite sure what happened this month, but I doubled my 2019 additions in just one month with eight things destined for my closet. Eep!

Now, the earrings below were actually gifts from Dave, so they kind of don’t count … right? And those athleisure basics were purchased to wear on the plane to Europe in May — and truth be told, that sweater-meets-hoodie has become my most worn piece this month. It’s so comfortable that I can’t help but put it on after work to meet our friends out for dive-bar beer. As always, I’m sharing the reasoning behind the items below.

I also thought it would be fun this month to debut a new section of this recurring post and share what I purchased for our house, too. Renovations obviously won’t count when it comes to chatting about my monthly spending, but I thought it’d be fun to let you know what I bought ’round these parts before I actually share photos of them in our home.

PURCHASED – FOR ME
See all of this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Loeffler Randall ‘Celest’ mules – I actually tried to order this pair of Loeffler Randall mules, but the copper ‘Celest’ style was nestled inside the package instead, and you know what? I actually fell in love with the crushed velvet mules with their low-block heel. I ended up finding them on Farfetch for cheaper than the Shopbop error and reordered them for around $100. They run a half size small.
  • Maeve ‘Brenda’ peasant top – I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did. The low v-neck is flattering and the oversize, billowy sleeves are a lot of fun! It’s cut pretty straight through the torso and doesn’t skim my hips that well when it’s untucked, but that’s fine because I actually prefer it tucked to rein in some of the fabric. I went with a small, but would have gone with a medium if I wasn’t going to tuck it in.
  • Banana Republic sweater hoodie – I put this on the day I received it and wore it after work every day for the following week. I’ve since controlled myself. It’s really cozy, though, and the tunic style is relatively flattering, all things considered. I’ve been wearing it with jeans and my beloved Vince sneakers to meet up with friends or go on short bike rides. I bought it in a medium, but could have definitely went with the small. It’s cut generously.
  • Banana Republic performance-stretch joggers – I always wear my yoga pants on international flights, and I often find myself annoyed with them halfway through the flight. They’re warm and uncomfortable and I’d rather wear something loose fitting. That’s where these come in. It was a welcome surprise that they’re flattering, too!
  • LOFT flower branch jumpsuit – I totally bought this to pack for Portugal. I wanted either a maxi dress or jumpsuit to wear on windy days so I didn’t need to worry about the wind flipping up the hem of my skirt. I also wanted at least one knee-covering option that I could pair with a scarf around my shoulders for popping into any conservative churches. I love this jumpsuit because it can easily be dressed up or down, and the smocked back gives it the perfect fit.
  • Chan Luu gold-plated pearl earrings – These are undoubtedly going to be my go-to pair of earrings this spring and summer. They’re versatile enough to elevate every outfit. They’re also lightweight and the gold-plated silver posts don’t irritated my ears.
  • Lele Sadoughi trumpt lily studs – These are like works of art with the attention to detail in these statement-making studs. The petals are made of acetate to keep them from weighing down your lobes during the day.
  • Vintage Whiting & Davis mesh bag (seen here) – I probably should have read the dimensions closer on this eBay find considering it really only fits a couple of credit cards, lipstick, and my keys. It was just so darling, though, that I couldn’t resist.
Home Purchases April 2019

PURCHASED – FOR HOME

  • Pottery Barn curtain rod in brass (and finials) – We finally found a curtain rod we liked for our dining room! We went with brass fixtures throughout the house — an obvious choice given that the original door hardware is brass — so we wanted to continue that with the curtain rod. A lot of brass ones were too modern for the space, but we finally came across this classic one from Pottery Barn.
  • West Elm sheer crosshatch curtains – Curtains are such a pain to shop for. If they’re not ugly, they’re obscenely expensive. I came across this set of sheers and purchased two sets to use in our dining room where we have three windows across one wall (see it here) that have old, cream-colored roller shades. I want to take down the shades and put up sheers for spring and summer to give us some privacy from the neighbor without sacrificing light. I’m not sure if these are “the ones” for that space, but they can easily move to one of our bedrooms when we find something we like more.
  • Sinland linen napkins – This might be one of my favorite Amazon finds yet! A set of six linen napkins for $21 is a steal and I’m really happy with the quality! They washed and dried well without wrinkling, piling, or shrinking. I’m probably going to snag another set or two while they’re still available.
  • ColorBird tassel tablecloth – We hosted Easter this year and I realized at the last minute (well, in time for Prime shipping) that our only tablecloths are Christmas themed. This one is a great price, but the quality is about what you’d expect for that price point.

DIDN’T WORK OUT
Things I tried and didn’t love.

  • Maeve ‘Kalapana’ blouse – The sleeves were too short and puffy.
  • Faithfull the Brand ‘Fresa’ dress – Oh my god, this was a disaster! It looks ridiculously cute online, but did not work on me at all. The dress was much too short and the v-neck much too deep where half of my bra was showing. It’s also not lined and felt cheap for the price.
  • J.Crew demi boot-cut jeans with front seam – Nope, the cropped boot-cut trend isn’t for me. I do like the “Perfecting Pockets” thing that J.Crew’s got going for their jeans, though.
  • Zara linen dress – This looked like a chic potato sack! Honestly, I really liked it, but it was scandalously short. I’m no stranger to a short dress, but this felt indecent.
  • Zara polka dot belt dress – I actually really liked this, but I ordered a large, which is what I normally order at Zara and it was at least two sizes too big. I don’t think I’ll bother reordering.
  • Zara gathered cape dress – In full disclosure, there’s a chance I’m not going to send this back. It’s sitting in my closet while the rest of my Zara returns are ready to be packed up. On one hand, this dress looks like a costume, albeit a chic and sophisticated one, and it’s not the most flattering (aside from the deep-v that opens up the neckline). On the other hand, I feel so darn pretty in it. With my hair up and a pair of statement earrings, this is the kind of cocktail dress I feel like I should have in my closet for whenever such an occasion arises. It’s just that those social engagements are rarely on my calendar. I don’t know what to do! (If you’re into DVF’s ‘Fleurette’ dress style, this one is a decent look for less.)
  • Madewell ruffle-strap maxi dress – This was actually really pretty, but I didn’t think I’d get enough wear out of it to justify the cost.
  • Hairstyles, hair care, hair growth tips and tricks, hair inspiration ideas

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
