Cocktail Recipe: The Classic Manhattan

November 10, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Cocktail Picks (also available in gold) | Brass Tray | Faux Pine Sprig

I typically opt for a classic Manhattan when we’re cocktailing at home. It’s such an easy, yet sophisticated, cocktail to make which lends itself perfectly to the upcoming holiday season. With just four ingredients (if you include the cherries), a Manhattan relies on quality spirits. I promise that it’s worth spending the extra money, even on the sweet vermouth. (Carpano Antica is my favorite and it should be kept refrigerated.) You’ll find the recipe below. Cheers!

Coupes | Brass Coasters | Tealight Holder | Flameless Tealights | Dining Table

What You’ll Need:

  • Cocktail mixing glass and strainer
  • Mixing spoon
  • Cocktail glass (I prefer the look of a coupe, but a double old fashioned glass works, too.)
  • Jigger

Ingredients:

Makes one serving.

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 to 2.5 ounces bourbon, depending on how strong you’d like it
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • Luxardo maraschino cherries

Preparation:

  1. Fill your mixing glass with ice.
  2. Add bitters, vermouth, bourbon.
  3. Stir until well-chilled.
  4. Strain into cocktail glass.
  5. Garnish with cherries.

On the Right Foot: Pretty Party Shoes, History of Ceiling Medallions, Carrie Bradshaw’s Paint Colors & More!

Someone replaced the T-Rex in Jurassic Park with a cat and, if I may be so bold, it’s better than the original.

It’s time to add Richmond, Virginia to your travel itinerary.

How to cut back your hostas in the fall.

Ceiling medallions weren’t always just ornamental.

These shoes! Oh my goodness, aren’t they just the prettiest and perfect for, like, every single special occasion you’ll have?!

Make apple cider donuts at home.

I’m in love with these cocktail picks for the holidays!

An artist that repurposes broken ceramic pieces into porcelain sculptures.

I placed an order for this darling dress.

Oliver was featured on the Schoolhouse Electric Instagram!

If you can’t snag reservations to stay in Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment, at least you can get the paint colors.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Travel Guide: A Weekend in Richmond, Virginia

November 4, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Richmond, Virginia had been on our travel list for awhile thanks to its burgeoning beer scene, but it wasn’t until we purchased the Graduate hotel’s “Hall Pass” package (read about it here) last summer that we decided fly to the historic city. In truth, we hesitated because we weren’t sure that we’d find enough to do to make a trip worthwhile. However, we were happily proven wrong with plenty to keep us busy during our three-night stay. Below, you’ll find some snapshots from our trip along with a list of our recommendations and “insider” suggestions.

PLAN YOUR TRIP

Below, I’ve compiled a list of the things we’ve enjoyed in Richmond. I’ve also included additional recommendations as a sort of “insider’s list” with places to visit from Dave’s sister’s friend, Meghan, who works at Visit Richmond and from my Instagram friend Laura who used to live there.

SEE & DO

  • Virginia Museum of Fine Arts – We could have spent so much more time at the art museum. It has an impressive collection — the Fabergé collection being one of the highlights — with well-executed special exhibits. (We were there for “The Dirty South” exhibit.)
  • Quirk – Stop in to browse the gallery or get a cocktail, even if you’re not staying at the hotel.
  • Edgar Allen Poe Museum – Poe spent the better part of his life in Richmond. This museum celebrates his life and legacy. It’s dorky and I absolutely loved it.
  • Riverfront Canal Walk – Located along downtown’s riverfront, the Canal Walk stretches 1.25 miles along the James River and Kanawha and Haxall Canals. You can walk, bike, or take a boat tour along the canal. Read more about its history here.
  • Virginia State Capitol – Even if you don’t want to tour the capitol, the grounds around the building are pretty with statues and government buildings.
  • Richmond Mural Project – Back in 2012, Richmond embarked on its goal of creating over 100 murals in just five years.
  • Explore Shockoe Slip – This area of the city was founded as a trade post in the early 1600s and is now the location of shops, restaurants, and businesses. It’s fun to poke around and walk the cobblestone streets.
  • Explore Shockoe Bottom – This area of the city has a somber past as the location where slaves were brought into town. Now, it’s a charming, industrial neighborhood with cobblestone streets, murals, restaurants, and shops. I stopped in at Shockoe Bottom Clay where I purchased a wood-fired ceramic vase by local artist Jocelyn Sandberg, which I think is actually the piece in the upper right of this image.

EAT & DRINK

  • Lucky AF – This was a fun Asian fusion restaurant with [apparently] the best sushi in Richmond. One of the rolls we selected was made with wild rice and was deliciously unexpected!
  • Lift Coffee Shop & Café – We went here for breakfast and iced coffee every day.
  • Charm School – A sweet little ice cream shop that also has dairy-free options. Plus, they have a cute “Greetings from Richmond” mural on the side of their building.
  • Triple Crossing – A brewery with solid beer options and pizza (we loved the pepperoni and hot honey one).
  • Breweries in Scott’s Addition – This area of town is exploding with breweries, restaurants, and apartments/condos. It feels like there’s a brewery on every block. The Veil and Vasen were two of our favorites; check out Starr Hill’s rooftop patio. (You could also work your way through Richmond’s Beer Trail to receive a hat at the end.)
  • Additional food recommendations we received: Urban Farmhouse Market & Café, Whisk (bakery), Carmela’s (pizzeria), and The Roosevelt (new southern fare), Lillie Pearl (southern), Soul Taco (Latin-southern fusion), Saison, Urban Hang Suite (coffee), Perly’s (Jewish deli), ZZQ (barbecue), Brenner Pass (alpine cuisine), Peter Chang (Chinese), Perch (Virginia-Filipino fusion), Alewife (Chesapeake Bay seafood), Sub Rosa (bakery), The Jasper (cocktails), Cask Café (beer bar), Zorch (NY-style pizza).

If that last bullet of food recommendations is any indication, we need to make another trip to the city just to dine!

OUR STAY & TRANSPORTATION

I wanted to add a few notes about transportation and accommodations. We stayed at the Graduate hotel, which you can read more about here. As far as transportation is concerned, you can absolutely get by without renting a car if you’re planning to stay in the city. Ubers were plentiful and the city has an incredibly easy bus rapid transit (BRT) system to get you to the different neighborhoods quickly and efficiently.

On the Right Foot: A Hand Cream for Dry Weather, the Nostalgia of Bad Photos, AI Names Paint Colors & More!

November 1, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Happy first day of November! This year has mercifully flown by and I’m excited to embrace the holiday season — although, maybe brands could hold off on sending Christmas content for another week.

And while I’d like to wait just a little bit longer before we’re knee-deep in Christmas cheer, I really do like these green gingham stockings.

Stuff mini pumpkins with mushrooms and cheese for a beautiful fall dish.

A snapshot of our living and dining rooms has become my most-liked photo on Instagram.

I have such dry skin once the weather gets cooler and recently tried a sample of this hand cream. I love it!

This made me smile!

The names for paint colors seem so random sometimes, but it’s even worse when AI takes the reins.

Loungewear dominated my favorite purchases of October.

Does anyone else kind of miss bad photos?

This Madewell tote is a good one!

Worth a scroll: 13 vintage-filled house tours.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Things I Bought & Loved in October (A.K.A. The Loungewear Edition)

October 27, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

October was all about being cozy with three pajama sets purchased! It was intentional, however, as I have strabismus surgery coming up in November and I wanted to have a selection of loungewear to look forward to wearing on my recovery days. (My left eye has been turning in as I’ve gotten older and I need to have the muscles adjusted so it’s straight again. Yes, I’m nervous. Yes, cute loungewear helps take the edge off.)

I did try on the coat that I was enamored with earlier this month and it was laughably bad on me. The color was beautiful, but the oversize fit was … not great. It looked like I was wearing my father’s jacket. I ordered a couple of additional coats to try and will report back if they’re worth keeping.

Other than that, I did find a beautiful vintage cocktail ring that I posted on my Insta story over the weekend, along with a vintage decanter for our bar. Those will make appearances online eventually!

IN THE WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Ann Taylor bunny pajama set – Proof that bunnies can be chic! I just love these so much. The colors, the contrast cuff, the satin fabric! It’s just all so good. I sized up to a large since the fabric doesn’t have any stretch to it and pajamas definitely can’t be restricting.
  • Soma tank and short pajama set – My favorite pajamas are from Soma’s “Cool Nights” collection, lauded for the fabric’s ability to stay cool and keep from sticking to you at night. I prefer shorts and tanks for sleeping, so this was a no-brainer for my collection. Plus, I can mix and match it with the two pieces below. (I bought a medium, which is my regular size at Soma.)
  • Soma ‘Cool Nights’ long sleeve pajama top – This top also runs true to size. I’ve been wearing it with the shorts from the pajama set above on work-from-home days.
  • Soma ‘Sunday’ lounge pants – I wore the shorts version of these a lot during the pandemic and fully expect the pants to be equally loved. I wear a medium in these as well.

AROUND THE HOUSE

  • Beech wood doorstops – I actually bought these last month and neglected to tell you about them! Our cat, Oliver, has a tendency to close doors and I get so nervous that he’ll lock himself in a bedroom while we’re gone that I bought four of these to keep our upstairs doors open. They’re prettier than metal doorstops and the price is great at $10 for a set of two.
  • Ranger Station balsam fir candle – The balsam scent of this candle is fresh and clean, making it ideal for the upcoming season. It makes for a great gift too, as it comes with a box of matches and can be used as a cocktail glass once the candle is finished.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
