On the Right Foot: A Hand Cream for Dry Weather, the Nostalgia of Bad Photos, AI Names Paint Colors & More!

November 1, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Happy first day of November! This year has mercifully flown by and I’m excited to embrace the holiday season — although, maybe brands could hold off on sending Christmas content for another week.

And while I’d like to wait just a little bit longer before we’re knee-deep in Christmas cheer, I really do like these green gingham stockings.

Stuff mini pumpkins with mushrooms and cheese for a beautiful fall dish.

A snapshot of our living and dining rooms has become my most-liked photo on Instagram.

I have such dry skin once the weather gets cooler and recently tried a sample of this hand cream. I love it!

This made me smile!

The names for paint colors seem so random sometimes, but it’s even worse when AI takes the reins.

Loungewear dominated my favorite purchases of October.

Does anyone else kind of miss bad photos?

This Madewell tote is a good one!

Worth a scroll: 13 vintage-filled house tours.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Things I Bought & Loved in October (A.K.A. The Loungewear Edition)

October 27, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

October was all about being cozy with three pajama sets purchased! It was intentional, however, as I have strabismus surgery coming up in November and I wanted to have a selection of loungewear to look forward to wearing on my recovery days. (My left eye has been turning in as I’ve gotten older and I need to have the muscles adjusted so it’s straight again. Yes, I’m nervous. Yes, cute loungewear helps take the edge off.)

I did try on the coat that I was enamored with earlier this month and it was laughably bad on me. The color was beautiful, but the oversize fit was … not great. It looked like I was wearing my father’s jacket. I ordered a couple of additional coats to try and will report back if they’re worth keeping.

Other than that, I did find a beautiful vintage cocktail ring that I posted on my Insta story over the weekend, along with a vintage decanter for our bar. Those will make appearances online eventually!

IN THE WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Ann Taylor bunny pajama set – Proof that bunnies can be chic! I just love these so much. The colors, the contrast cuff, the satin fabric! It’s just all so good. I sized up to a large since the fabric doesn’t have any stretch to it and pajamas definitely can’t be restricting.
  • Soma tank and short pajama set – My favorite pajamas are from Soma’s “Cool Nights” collection, lauded for the fabric’s ability to stay cool and keep from sticking to you at night. I prefer shorts and tanks for sleeping, so this was a no-brainer for my collection. Plus, I can mix and match it with the two pieces below. (I bought a medium, which is my regular size at Soma.)
  • Soma ‘Cool Nights’ long sleeve pajama top – This top also runs true to size. I’ve been wearing it with the shorts from the pajama set above on work-from-home days.
  • Soma ‘Sunday’ lounge pants – I wore the shorts version of these a lot during the pandemic and fully expect the pants to be equally loved. I wear a medium in these as well.

AROUND THE HOUSE

  • Beech wood doorstops – I actually bought these last month and neglected to tell you about them! Our cat, Oliver, has a tendency to close doors and I get so nervous that he’ll lock himself in a bedroom while we’re gone that I bought four of these to keep our upstairs doors open. They’re prettier than metal doorstops and the price is great at $10 for a set of two.
  • Ranger Station balsam fir candle – The balsam scent of this candle is fresh and clean, making it ideal for the upcoming season. It makes for a great gift too, as it comes with a box of matches and can be used as a cocktail glass once the candle is finished.

On the Right Foot: Wes Anderson’s Train Carriage, the Cult of the Nap Dress, Colorful Coupes & More!

October 25, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Peek inside the train carriage Wes Anderson designed.

Make a batch of Ted Lasso’s biscuits.

In time for Halloween: the history of cemeteries.

I just ordered a set of garland ties for the upcoming holiday season. They act like a twist tie, which will help garlands stay put on a staircase railing better than Command Hooks do.

Why an art museum turned to OnlyFans.

Even if we don’t realize it, adjectives in English absolutely have an order they must follow.

I loved looking through the galleries of these time capsule homes for sale in the Chicago area.

The cult of the Nap Dress.

Yes, Reese’s pumpkins do taste better than a regular peanut butter cup.

I can’t get over how much I love the print on this blouse.

Snag a set of colorful coupes just in time for holiday entertaining. The peach set is my favorite.

On the Right Foot: Margot Tenenbaum’s Style, the Perfect Fall Coat, an Oktoberfest Guide & More!

October 11, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

We’ve been talking about going to Oktoberfest for the past couple of years and just booked a Munich hotel for 2022! It’s fully refundable if things change over the next year and flights aren’t even available to book yet, but still! It feels so much more likely now that the hotel is settled! If you’ve been to Munich, please send recommendations! We’re going to do five nights in the city and then head somewhere else (TBD). If Oktoberfest is on your bucket list, here’s a handy guide I came across.

What makes Margot Tenenbaum’s style so good, even 20 years later.

Twelve outdoor sconces under $100.

The layered history of banana pudding.

I’m a huge fan of a physical planner and I have my eye on this one for ’22.

Here are 20 fun facts about James Bond. (We’ve started watching all of the Bond films chronologically. We knocked out Dr. No and From Russia With Love last week.)

This had me cracking up!

I keep clicking on this coat every single day. It’s good, isn’t it? That color!

Did you hear that Eminem opened a restaurant in Detroit called Mom’s Spaghetti? If that’s not ridiculous enough, wait till you watch the commercial.

My favorite fall and winter sweater is back, this time in a pretty camel hue.

Progress Report: New Outdoor Sconces & 12 Options Under $100

October 6, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

I feel a little embarrassed posting this photo since our house is in desperate need of a power wash — but, I like documenting our progress. So, today’s post is about the small-but-necessary updates we’ve made to our front porch recently: new sconces and an outdoor outlet!

The outdoor outlet is definitely an eyesore, but it’s a small price to pay to be able to hang Christmas lights outside. I had been using these socket adapters with our old sconces and they’re great in a pinch, but an outdoor outlet is really a necessary upgrade. We have an outlet on the interior side of this wall in the same spot, making it the easiest placement for the outlet. I would have preferred to have it less obvious, but it doesn’t really bother me that much. I’ll put a potted plant in front of it next year.

The more exciting change was swapping out the old sconces. As a reminder, this is what we were starting with:

Sherwin Williams SuperDeck Wet Clay

I don’t mind the farmhouse shape of those sconces, but they didn’t work with our aesthetic. Beyond that, they were flimsy and were starting to rust. (I don’t know about you, but rusting electrical fixtures don’t give me peace of mind.) You’ll also notice that the canopy is circular and the siding trim behind it is a rectangle. There’s an overhang, so I don’t think much moisture made its way in, but it was a haven for insects. We had a hornet nest under the one on the right, which was thankfully abandoned when we took down the fixture.

My main priority for a new sconce was one with a rectangular canopy that would fit within the existing trim. I have the biggest crush on this sconce from Schoolhouse, but the canopy wouldn’t work and, well, $300 per sconce simply isn’t in our budget with an upcoming bathroom renovation. (We have two sconces in front and one over our back patio door.) I strongly considered this one from Rejuvenation, but after measuring the sconce plus the globe, I discovered that the top of the globe would be in line with the very top of the door and that seemed too high. I eventually came across these. Are they my favorite sconce? Not by any stretch of the imagination. However, the canopy was correct, the size was spot on, and the price at $40 each was enticing enough to place an order. I figured I could always return them if I hated them. They ended up being far better quality than I expected for the price. (It’s also worth noting that we did not want a light with an integrated LED; we wanted to use our own smart bulbs to set the automation.)

Since I’ve done a lot of sconce-searching over the past few months, I thought I’d put together a roundup of outdoor sconces under $100:

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX | SEVEN | EIGHT | NINE | TEN | ELEVEN | TWELVE

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
